Web logs came into being in the late 1990s as an online form of diary or journal that the author wanted to give exposure to and this term was shortened to blog. The best way to understand what is a blog is to think of it as a small website on which the blogger (as the author is called) posts the thoughts and opinion he wants to share with the world. Part of understanding what is a blog is knowing that bloggers are not only the authors of the blogs and even those who maintain the blogs or respond to the posts in them are also known by this term.

When trying to understand what is a blog it is important to know that there is no set format for a blog and it may be present in any manner and contain text, graphics and pictures, audio and video links and also links to other blogs and websites. There is also no boundary as to what can be blogged about and on the internet you will find blogs about subjects that are making headlines today and well as those which no one knows about, blogs about things in the distant past or thing expected to happen in the future – anything can be written about.

A blog is usually written in an open conversational style and is, with a few exceptions, meant to be a form of personal expression. Depending on the views of the author a blog can be very conventional and sedate in the subject, and how the author’s opinion are expressed and what type of comments and responses are accepted for posting on the blog are decided by him.

Other blogs may be very sensational in nature and present opinions and use language that may shock many readers – while these views and ways of expression are often genuine, they are also sometimes done just to create controversy and thus generate interest in the blog.

Anyone interested in presenting his or her opinions to the world through the medium of the internet may do so by Blogging. Blogging does not involve any expense and there are numerous websites that will help a newbie to not only have a place to post his thoughts but also help him to design the blog and provide help in various forms. There are no limitations on who can blog – people of literally all ages, all walks of life and from every region of the globe are blogging and their number is gowning by the minute. If your blog becomes popular and attracts a large audience, you can earn money by allowing ads to be placed on your blog – many very popular bloggers earn large incomes this way.
